App Overview

Spotify is a music streaming app that allows users to listen to music, podcasts, audio books, and even watch video clips. It has a huge library of songs and playlists that are organized by genre, mood, and activity, making it easy for users to find the right music for any occasion. Users can also create their own playlists, follow the playlists of other users, and share music with friends.

Spotify is a free app, but it does offer a premium subscription that unlocks additional features, such as the ability to listen to music offline and without ads. Parents should be aware that the premium subscription requires a monthly fee.

A potential danger of using Spotify is exposure to explicit content. While Spotify does offer a clean version of many songs, it is still possible for kids to come across explicit lyrics or explicit content in some podcasts. Parents can set up parental controls to filter out explicit content by enabling the "explicit content filter" in the app settings.

Spotify — arguably the most popular music streaming app today — has a large selection of pornographic content. Looking closer, our team found that nearly every music platform out there has this type of content as well. This includes platforms like YouTube Music, Amazon Music, and Pandora. Considering the amount of time the average kid spends listening to music on any one of these platforms, parents needed to know about this.

Another potential danger is the risk of exposure to inappropriate content through user-generated playlists or through sharing of music with friends. Parents should talk to their kids about appropriate music and encourage them to report any inappropriate content they come across.

Not every child will search for or stumble upon this kind of content, however. Whether you decide to allow Spotify because of these dangers — and every music streaming app has content like this, not just Spotify — will be a personal decision and based on how your child has been interacting with the service.

With Spotify, Bark can monitor what your child listens to — including explicit song titles and lyrics. You'll get an alert so you can check in and talk to your kid about their listening history.

Can Bark Monitor Spotify?

Yes! For both Android and iOS devices, Bark can monitor the song lyrics of the music your child plays through the app. Bark will scan each song and alert you to things like profanity, violence, suicidal messaging, sexual content, and more.

Other Features of Bark

In addition to monitoring Spotify, Bark also empowers you to set healthy boundaries with robust screen time limits. You can decide when exactly your child has access to the app. This could look like “only in the evenings”, “just for 30 minutes a day”, or “never” if you want to give them a break for a period of time.

Don’t forget — with Bark you can also block websites and track your child’s location when they’re roaming near and far.
