Ologies: A Podcast Review for Parents

Updated January 29, 2024

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 3.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 16 and up

There’s nothing like learning about a new topic straight from an expert. Especially niche subjects like eudemonology (the study of happiness) and benthopelagic nematology (the study of deep-sea worms). Alie Ward couldn’t agree more, as she’s released hundreds of episodes of Ologies, talking with experts on just about any subject you can think of.

If you and your teen are looking for a new podcast to dive into together, this may be the next one you cue up on the way to school! But parents should know this podcast has some content that’s not suitable for all ages. Keep reading our review to get all the details you need to know!

Harmful Content ❗️

Rating:

Ologies is first and foremost not a podcast made specifically for kids. The topics covered range from things as innocent as nephology (the study of clouds) to sexology (the study of…you guessed it!) where the conversation gets too detailed for young ears. It’s also important to note that even a conversation about a seemingly harmless topic can get off track to something inappropriate. Ward isn’t afraid to let the dialogue with her guests be less than academic, which lends itself to a more casual, albeit adult, listening experience.

Parents with mature teens likely don’t need to be too concerned with the content. But young or immature teens may want to check out Smologies — Ward’s bite-sized, kid-friendly version of Ologies

Language

Ward does swear in most episodes. Some platforms such as Spotify have her episodes marked “E” for explicit.

Sex

Sex is mentioned quite frequently, depending on the topic. She has a handful of episodes that specifically center around sex or human anatomy. But as previously mentioned, sometimes Ward’s conversation can veer into adult territory even if the chosen topic isn’t necessarily about sex. For instance, one episode about paleontology (study of dinosaurs) spends some time discussing penis implants.

Violence

This podcast does not have violent content.

Positive Value 💫

Rating:

Ologies is a great podcast for people interested in learning from the experts in the most informal way possible. The conversations between Ward and her guests always feel like two old friends just sharing fun facts. Her guests are always very knowledgeable and have the academic background to prove it. With their expertise and Alie’s easy-going conversation style, each episode is enjoyable to listen to no matter your initial interest in the subject.

If you have a highly curious teen who loves to absorb new information like a sponge, this is a great podcast to look into!

So, should my kid listen to it?

We’d say this podcast is suitable for teens ages 15 and up. Just make sure you and your child are comfortable with the maturity level needed for most episodes.
