Is ZeeMee Safe? A Review for Parents
Overview
If your teen is about to start their college journey, chances are they are looking for a roommate at their college of choice. Maybe they have a few colleges in mind and are looking to get a feel for each one. Enter ZeeMee: an app positioned as a roommate and friend finder.
The question is, is ZeeMee safe for your teen? Read below to get all the details.
Harmful Content 😲
While ZeeMee’s platform is designed to connect pre-college students, this ends up being a double-edged sword. By default, ZeeMee allows anyone to see your profile, what colleges you’ve been admitted to, and to message you privately. In addition, you can choose to share personal details with everyone who comes across your profile, including your full name, email address, hometown, attended high school, interests, and other social media accounts. There is also automated monitoring of DMs, and if spam is detected, a message will display informing you that a report option is available. It does not censor the messages.
Predation 🚨
As mentioned previously, the app’s ease of interacting and communicating with strangers is also its downfall. The more you share, the more likely you are to find a roommate or friend, but this also makes you more vulnerable to predation.
Positive Value 💙
The app’s mission to connect students with potential roommates and friends is noble and, in the best-case scenario, can lead to helpful college relationships. Unfortunately, this is overshadowed by the risks associated with the app. If you limit the information you share and use the app’s privacy settings, it can be a useful tool for finding friends.
Privacy 🔒
The app has built-in privacy features that can be enabled, though they are turned off by default. You can restrict direct messages and social media links to followers only (which you can also set to approved followers only), and you can also make your profile not discoverable in the roommate and friend-finding sections. By default, people can see whether you have viewed their profile, but you can turn this off.
Parental Controls ✅
ZeeMee does not offer any parental controls, but luckily, Bark can help! With Bark, you can: block ZeeMee and manage when your child can use it throughout the day.
So, should my kid download it?
If your kid is looking for friends or a roommate, this app may be useful. Make sure your child is mindful of sharing too much personal information and make sure your child utilizes the app’s privacy settings. Since this app is intended for high school students about to go to college, we recommend this app for teens aged 17+.
