Recommended Age: 8 and up

Seek by iNaturalist is a nature identification app that’s bound to get outdoorsy kids excited. You can take photos of plants, fungi, bugs, and even animals and the app will try to identify the name and species. It’s the perfect learning app to pull up on long walks to finally figure out what all of the cool trees in your neighborhood are.

Harmful Content 😲

Rating:

Seek only has plant and animal content, so there’s nothing potentially harmful about it.

Predation 🚨

Rating:

Is Seek safe in terms of harmful content? Within Seek itself, there is no chat or messaging feature. There is, however, an option to create an iNaturalist app account. The iNaturalist app allows for community review of plant IDs, and shows usernames. On this companion app, there is no chat or messaging feature, but there is the ability to leave comments, so just be aware.

Positive Value 💙

Rating:

When it comes to learning about nature, taking cool photos of living things, and getting curious about the world around you, Seek is second to none. Don’t be surprised if your kid starts memorizing the types of bushes in your yard or calling out the names of flowers on the way to school.

Privacy 🔒

Rating:

You can use the Seek app completely anonymously, so privacy isn’t really an issue. You can create an iNaturalist account to save your identifications, but it’s not required.

Parental Controls ✅

Rating:

Is Seek safe in terms of privacy? There are no parental controls because there is no objectionable content or messaging capability in the app. Bark’s screen time tool can help you:

  • Block Seek entirely, if needed.
  • Manage when your child can access it throughout the day.

So, should my kid download it?

Yep! This plant and animal ID app is a great way to get kids interested in the natural world. There’s no chatting or messaging, so contact with strangers is minimized.
