Overview
Elden Ring is a role-playing, open-world fantasy game where players assume the character of a fallen warrior in a mystical, war-torn landscape. This warrior is tasked with retrieving the missing pieces of the Elden Ring and putting them together to become the Elden Lord. Elden Ring is full of dark fantasy, deep lore, and intense combat. Despite its impressive world-building and challenging gameplay, this game is likely not suitable for young players — here’s why.
Harmful Content ❗️
Parents should know that Elden Ring is rated M for Mature. Content is often gory and gruesome. One thing Elden Ring doesn’t have (which most games do) is an online chat option. Even though it’s a multiplayer online game, players cannot voice or text chat with each other. However, most players use an external chatting platform such as Discord to get around this.
Language
Every now and then, words like “hell” or “sh*t” will appear in dialogue.
Sex
There is little to no sexual content, besides the occasional character that is illustrated somewhat suggestively. But sex and romance are not focal points in this game.
Violence
Death and violence are frequent, as gameplay usually centers around battles and fights. Players use a variety of weapons to hurt or kill their opponents. Fight scenes are often graphic and bloody, and players can see dead bodies on the screen.
Positive Value 💫
Elden Ring is known to be challenging, but it teaches perseverance to those who commit to mastering each level. When you play with others, it encourages teamwork or friendly competition. And as with any video game, you can expect practice in hand-eye coordination and problem-solving. While these features are great for kids, they can also be found in tons of other games that have more age-appropriate content for younger players.
So, should my kid play it?
Given the maturity rating and intense content, we’d say this game is more appropriate for older teens, around 17 and up.
