Overview
Curious what the most popular film on Netflix is ever? That award goes to KPop Demon Hunters, an animated film by the same creators of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. With over 236 million views, this movie took kids everywhere by storm with its insanely catchy tunes and action-packed story.
The story begins with Mira, Zoey, and Rumi, who are pop stars by day and demon hunters by night. They use their music and message of positivity to protect the world from dark forces that threaten to invade it. But when the demon king sends a boy band to push back against the girl’s defenses, all three of them are put to the test to save not only the world, but also the bond that keeps their friendship and strength alive.
So, should parents let their kids watch this? As always, every family is different, and you know your child best. But we put together all the details you need so you can make the best choice for your family.
Harmful Content ❗️
Parents should know that this movie deals a lot with spirituality and inner struggles through the lens of demons and sin. In the story, demons are controlled by the demon king, Gwi-Ma, who keeps them under his control by using their deepest shame against them. The way to combat this control is by using the power of kindness and unity with friends.
The movie reveals that one of the girls, Rumi, is part demon herself. She carries deep shame about her identity and hides it from her best friends, following her caretaker’s advice to “pretend everything is fine.” Rumi and other characters deal with their inner struggles in unhealthy ways until the end, when they learn to reject shame and embrace self-acceptance and honesty instead.
Language
Some insulting and bullying, such as “idiot” and “jerk,” but nothing more profane than that.
Sex
This movie has no sexually explicit content, although there is flirting and hints of romance. Additionally, female characters are depicted as “swooning” when they see a male’s six-pack abs. The exaggerated depiction includes popcorn popping from their eyes and faces turning red-hot. This is more for comedic effect than anything else, but it may feel too over-the-top for some families.
Violence
The main characters are frequently fighting demons and put in life-threatening situations. They use magical weapons and powers to fight and defeat the demons in an animated, stylistic way. In one part of the movie, when the demons begin overtaking folks, you can see people’s souls being sucked away and disappearing. This is not a gory depiction, but it may be unsettling for some.
There’s a dark part of the movie where Rumi feels she should’ve never been born. She goes to her caretaker with a sword and says, “Do what you should’ve done from the beginning.” Her caretaker refuses, and Rumi goes on to truly fight and defeat Gwi-Ma. It ultimately ends positively, but this scene may be distressing for some audiences.
Positive Value 💫
This movie teaches the deep importance of accepting your full identity, including the flaws that might bring you shame. Rumi accepting herself as part demon is an example, but this is portrayed in other characters as well. Additionally, it shows the importance of teamwork, loyalty, and fighting for friendship even when it’s hard. The strong bond between the three girls is evident and has many characteristics that kids should seek in their own friendships.
Along with important themes, this movie is simply fun. The bright visuals, incredible music, and clever humor make this an entertaining watch for all ages. It also offers a great representation of Korean culture, such as food and traditions, that can spark kids’ appreciation for other cultures.
So, should my kid watch it?
We’d suggest this movie for kids around 10 and up. While generally appropriate for most audiences, some of the spirituality, mature themes, and moderate violence may not be suitable for young kids.
