Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 2.5 / 5

Recommended Age: 13 and up

Teen romance TV dramas are never in short supply, and one of the latest ones on Netflix is My Life With the Walter Boys. Originally a Wattpad story by Ali Novak, the show begins with Jackie Howard, a driven New York teen whose life suddenly changes when she loses her family in a tragedy. She then finds herself in small-town Colorado with the Walter family and their rambunctious boys. Jackie has to learn to adjust from her quiet New York life to the chaotic and unconventional home of the Walter boys.Ā

So, is this a safe show for teens to watch? We did a deep dive into the episodes so you don’t have to. Let’s dive in!

Harmful Content ā—ļø

Rating:

Parents should know that this show deals heavily with Jackie’s loss and grief. While it’s handled tactfully, there are still moments of emotional struggle and hurt that may be intense or triggering for some audiences. Additionally, the show features some moments of typical yet misguided teenage behavior. Kids are often unkind towards each other, both at school and at home.Ā

LanguageĀ

There are some infrequent uses of words like ā€œhellā€ or ā€œdamn.ā€Ā

Sex

My Life With the Walter Boys doesn’t have any nudity or sexually explicit scenes. However, there are teen romances, flirting, kisses, and scenes of teens lying in bed together. There are also references to ā€œhooking upā€ and implied sexual encounters.Ā

ViolenceĀ

There’s no violence in this show, besides the references to the accident that Jackie’s family was in. This is not depicted in the show, just referred to through news reports.Ā

Positive Value šŸ’«

Rating:

While the show is mostly entertaining in the way any drama series is, there are also themes of resiliency seen in Jackie’s character. While she struggles with loss, change, and tons of other challenges, she chooses to push through and focus on what’s important. Also, the strong family bonds between the Walters are evident, despite the common arguments and frustrations that any close family experiences.

So, should my kid watch it?

We’d suggest this show for 13 and up, given some of the mature content around grief and teen relationships.Ā
