Is Replika Safe? A Replika Review for Parents

Overall Rating:
⭐ 1.0 / 5

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 1.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 18 and up

AI chatbots and companions are becoming more popular, and teens in particular seem drawn to these apps to find a virtual “friend”, get advice, or even roleplay relationships. One of these apps that’s been on the rise recently is Replika. Replika allows you to interact with your very own AI companion — you get to customize the gender, relationship status, and even give a short description for its personality.

While some may find Replika silly or entertaining, it can pose serious risks for kids and teens. The best way to keep your child safer in the world of AI is by being informed, and here’s what parents should know about Replika.

Harmful Content 😲

Rating:

Parents should know that Replika is technically intended for users ages 18+. However, this does not stop kids from fudging their age to access the app anyway. As with most AI chatbots, Replika companions have been known to steer conversations to inappropriate places. A recent update made it so that NSFW content was completely removed from the free version of the app, but still accessible with one of the paid versions. However, even users of the free version have reported instances of their AI companion making sexual comments or advances.

Another important note is that some kids are using Replika for the fun of it, but others are using it because they’re seeking connection and comfort. Kids may find it easier to share their feelings in an online setting like Replika rather than in their real lives. Replacing face-to-face connections with AI can send kids down a tricky path, and it’s important for parents to know who — or what — they’re child is using for emotional support.

Predation 🚨

Rating:

Replika does not offer any ability to chat with other users within the app. Interactions are strictly between the user and their AI companion. However, there is an option in settings that will take you to Replika’s official Reddit, Discord, and Facebook pages. This could act as a backdoor access to the internet, where kids could encounter online predators.

Positive Value 💙

Rating:

Considering this app isn’t meant for kids or teens in the first place, there’s very little value for them to use it. In general, AI certainly has its place as being helpful and entertaining, but the risks are also just as evident. And with an AI chatbot like Replika, the risks outweigh any potential benefits.

Privacy 🔒

Rating:

Upon creating an account, Replika will ask for your email address, name, gender, and age. Replika’s privacy policy states that they store user data to better improve their service, but don’t sell it to third parties.

Parental Controls ✅

Rating:

Replika doesn’t have any parental controls, since it technically should only be used by adult users. But the app also doesn’t have any form of age verification to prevent kids from using it anyway.

Additionally, since NSFW content is available through the paid version of the app, you’ll want to set up parental controls for in-app purchases. You can check out our guide on how to turn off in-app purchases for iOS and Android devices.

The good news is that Bark can also provide some extra controls! With Bark, you can:

  • Block Replika entirely, if needed.
  • Manage when your child can use Replika throughout the day.

Bark can also block the entire category of AI apps and sites if you feel your child is ready for access to this type of content.

So, should my kid download it?

No, Replika is not an app meant for kids, and there’s a high potential of encountering sexual or inappropriate content. We suggest discussing the dangers of AI chatbots with your child so they are best prepared if they ever encounter them elsewhere.
