Overview
Picture a period drama set in regency-era London — including grand balls, fancy gowns, and all the historical traditions of high society. Then put a modern twist on it with a diverse cast and a present-day soundtrack (such as a string quartet playing Ariana Grande), and you have Bridgerton. The drama and plot twists are similar to that of Gossip Girl, but the set and visuals are more like Downton Abbey.
The show centers around the wealthy Bridgerton family and their eight siblings, all of whom experience love, scandal, and intense societal expectations. The show became massively popular on Netflix with its first season in 2020, and now has three seasons with more set to release in 2026.
Given its popularity and appeal to teen audiences, let’s discuss important elements of Bridgerton’s content and see if it’s appropriate for your child to watch.
Harmful Content ❗️
Parents should know that Bridgerton does not shy away from adult topics and was not written with a young, impressionable audience in mind. Much of the plot centers around love and romance, exploring many facets of adult relationships.
There are also scenes involving partying (usually high-class parties and dances), sometimes involving drinking and drunkenness.
Language
There is some adult language, including “b*tch” and “f*ck.” There are also terms used specific to the time, such as “loose” to describe women thought to be having inappropriate relations with men. Or “rake” to describe sexually active men.
Sex
Bridgerton is known for having frequent sexual themes and scenes. There are multiple scenes simulating sex and masturbation. Both males and females are shown in the nude, the audience can see buttocks and bare breasts, though genitals are covered. In general, sex, marriage, and romance are very central to the show.
Violence
This is not a generally violent show. There are occasional fistfights and some character deaths, none of which is portrayed graphically or in much detail.
Positive Value 💫
Mixed in with the scandal, betrayals, and society gossip, the show values themes of loyalty and friendship. The Bridgerton family ultimately supports and cares deeply for each other. Additionally, the show highlights how unrealistic societal expectations can be damaging and characters are often seen questioning or confronting the norm. The show is also high in female empowerment through the characters of Daphne, Kate, Eloise, and Penelope.
So, should my kid watch it?
Due to the high sexual and mature content, we’d say this show is more appropriate for older teens around 16 and up. Remember, you know your child best and what they can handle.
