Red Dead Redemption: A Video Game Review For Parents

Updated July 1, 2025

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 1.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 17 and up

Red Dead Redemption is a well-known and loved action-packed Western video game — and it was definitely not made for kids. Players are taken back to wild west America in the early 1900s, following an ex-outlaw facing crimes of his past and present. While it’s packed with stunning visuals and has an award-winning storyline, it also has tons of adult and inappropriate content. Here’s everything parents need to know about this game.

Harmful Content ❗️

Rating:

Red Dead Redemption is very adult-oriented, mostly for the violent content but also for heavy profanity and sexual references. Characters also consume substances such as alcohol and drugs like opium.

One major theme of this game is the struggle for justice in a morally gray world. The main character, John Marston, is an ex-outlaw who tries to seek redemption for his past life, but still finds himself in the midst of morally complex situations. The violence in this game is not just intense for its gore, but also for the emotional turmoil it comes with.

Lastly, parents should know that Red Dead Redemption can be played online with other players, and the chat is unmoderated. Players are likely to encounter inappropriate content and toxic behavior in the chat from other players.

Language

F-bombs and other profanities are used frequently.

Sex

There are scenes of nudity and sexual acts in this game. There’s one instance where players see a man and a woman having sex. Other instances show a woman’s breasts and another a naked man with his genitals cut off. There are also times when characters reference sexual acts, scenes that take place in brothels, and women who are scantily-clad. Lastly, there’s a scene in which a woman is almost sexually assaulted, but the crime is stopped before it happens.

Violence

This video game does not shy away from gory violence. The game is based on players using violence and aggression to complete their missions, including pistol fights, fist fights, and more. The storyline also includes scenes of torture, execution, and the death of innocent civilians. Violent scenes are depicted graphically, with realistic-looking bloody scenes.

Positive Value 💫

Rating:

One thing people love about this game is how the themes make players question ideas about right and wrong, redemption, and the price of violence in one’s life. The main character’s development exhibits much of this, and while he is not a first-choice role model, he shows loyalty and values his family. However, even given these insightful components of the game, we wouldn’t say this balances out the harmful content that kids would be exposed to.

So, should my kid play it?

Due to the mature and adult content, we don’t suggest this game for kids. We recommend parents wait until kids are at least 17 before allowing them to play.
