Young Royals: A TV Show Review For Parents

Updated February 19, 2026

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 1.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 16+

Young Royals is a Swedish-origin, popular LGBTQIA+ teen romance show that follows the Crown Prince of Sweden, Wilhelm, as he navigates a complex life at a private, exclusive boarding school. There, he meets his love interest, Simon, and begins to explore and embrace his sexual identity.

Many see Young Royals as Netflix’s answer to Heartstopper fanatics’ calls for a more mature, developed LGBTQIA+ teen romance show . For teens who enjoyed Heartstopper, they may consider it as one of their next watches, but parents should be aware of the show’s adult themes that are pervasive throughout. The show is appropriate for ages 16 and up; get the full picture below.

Harmful Content ❗️

Rating:

Young Royals shows the crown prince’s entire life. Whether it be drunken party events or intimate scenes, the show leaves little to the imagination. We’ll break it down in the section below.

Language

Adult language is prevalent throughout. “Sh*t”, “f*ck”, “d*mn”, “h*ll”, “a**”, among other expletives, are common.

Sex

Sex is a central characteristic of the show. Wilhelm navigates his relationship with Simon and the turmoil that follows after an intimate moment is recorded and shared on social media. You can also expect kissing, holding hands, flirting, toxic relationships, and references to sexual activities.

Violence

While violence is not central to the show, there are many instances of violence throughout the show. Guns are shown and used aggressively, albeit sparingly. Fistfights are not frequent, but should be expected.

Positive Value 💫

Rating:

This show offers much positive value for an adult, but the explicit content makes it unsuitable for a young or impressionable audience. On a base level, it may appear as an entertaining drama, but there are significant subtexts. The cast is extremely diverse, bringing many lenses. This includes showing struggles for lower-income families trying to get the best (and therefore priciest) education, challenges faced by racial minorities, challenges for women in today’s society, and, most prevalently, being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

So, should my kid watch it?

We’d suggest this show for teens aged 16 and up. Before watching, they may benefit from being spoken to about some of the intense themes they may see and the underlying messages behind the show. As always, it’s important to consider your family’s own values and your child’s maturity level before allowing them to watch popular shows. We hope this review helped shed some light on whether Young Royals is a fit for your family!
