Overview
Whether your child is a Marvel fan, a comic fan, or both, this series might be the next best read on your child’s list! Marvel Runaways follows a group of kids who discover their parents are a part of a notorious criminal organization. The series follows this unlikely band of teen heroes as they try to expose and stop their parents’ evil schemes.
The comic book series is generally safe for around ages 11, but Disney recently adapted the series into a short TV series that is geared towards an older audience. For comic book enthusiasts, here’s what parents should know.
Harmful Content ❗️
Parents should know that though this series is mostly kid-friendly, it also explores themes around betrayal, family conflict, and distrust of adults. The teens experience hardship and loss throughout the story, and characters frequently find themselves in dangerous or perilous situations. While these can be serious or more mature scenes, they are generally depicted in a tactful way that is not too graphic or gory.
Language
This series has little to no profanity, aside from the occasional insults or slang between teens.
Sex
There are no sexually explicit scenes in this series. Teen romance, flirting, and crushes come up and are used as important plotlines, but it’s not necessarily the sole focus of the story.
Violence
Violence is certainly one of the more prominent elements of the story. Superheroes frequently engage in battle, and characters use powers, weapons, or technology in combat. Some scenes include serious injury or even death. However, these scenes are stylized in a more cartoonish fashion, not realistic or graphic.
Positive Value 💫
Marvel Runaways highlights some beautiful themes surrounding friendship, courage, and standing up against wrongdoing. The teens exemplify what it looks like to choose your own path and the importance of moral responsibilities. The main characters grow as they learn to trust each other and make ethical decisions independent of their parents’ actions.
So, should my kid read it?
We’d say this series is safe for ages around 11 and up. It’s important to take your child’s own maturity level into consideration, but overall, this comic is beloved by tons of young Marvel fans.
