For those who grew up with the popular children’s book Anne of Green Gables, this show might tug on your nostalgia heartstrings! Anne with an E is a reimagined, modern adaptation of the story of Anne Shirley and the Cuthberts. Taking place in the late 1800s, orphan Anne is sent to live with aging siblings, Morilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Parents should know that while Anne with an E is largely based on the children’s book, the modern twist brings some slightly more adult or mature topics throughout the show. For one, the show addresses societal realities and challenges more so than the book does, including racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. Additionally, Anne and other characters experience traumatic events, including abuse, depression, suicidal ideation, and the death of a loved one. These topics are usually handled tactfully, but may spark questions or discussions with your child.

Some characters use harsh, bullying language towards each other, including “stupid” or “trash.”

Anne exemplifies individuality and is someone who is not weighed down by societal expectations, as she never ceases to be the strong-willed young woman she naturally is. But she also shows humility as she learns from others and her past mistakes. The Cuthberts equally learn a lot from their relationship with her, as they always choose grace and compassion. Overall, Anne with an E values empathy, resilience, and relationships with emotional depth.
